“You don’t get older, you get better.” – pictured above is Shirley Bassey in Wales during 1955. Dame Shirley Veronica Bassey was born on January 8, 1937, in Tiger Bay, Blue town, Cardiff. She is a Welsh singer who began her career in the 1950s and is best known for her incredibly powerful contralto voice. Bassey is mostly recognized from her well-known recorded theme songs for the James Bond films ‘Goldfinger’ (1964), ‘Diamonds are Forever’ (1971), and ‘Moonraker’ (1979).

Bassey happened to be the 6th and youngest child of her Nigerian father Henry Bassey and her English mother Eliza Jane Start. In her early years during school, students, and even teachers would offer her little encouragement when it came to her singing; Bassey says “everyone told me to shut up, even in the school choir, the teacher kept telling me to back off until I was singing in the corridor!”

A lot has changed since her schooling years though, as Bassey is considered to be one of the most highly regarded and popular female vocalists in Britain during the second half of the 20th century. In January of 1959, she became the first Welsh singer to receive a number one single, and later in 1977, she received a Brit Award for ‘Best British Female Solo Artist.’ Bassey was appointed a Dame Commander of the order of the British Empire for services to the performing arts in 2000.
