Pictured is Winston Churchill sitting on one of the damaged chairs that were used in Hitler’s bunker in Berlin, 1945. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born on November 30, 1874, at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Churchill was a British politician, army officer and writer. He also happened to be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for five years, from 1940-1945 — where he led Britain to victory during World War II.

Churchill was born into a wealthy and aristocratic family, being a direct descendant of the Dukes of Marlborough; which made his family one of the highest levels of the British aristocracy. His mother Jennie and father Randolph became estranged over the years, which made it difficult for Churchill to have much of a relationship with his father. Later on, when he referred to his mother he said, “I loved her dearly — but at a distance.”

From 1895-1900, Churchill was commissioned as the second lieutenant of the British army, earning him a wage of £150 a year. During the early 1900s, Churchill started his career in Parliament, where he first stood as a Conservative candidate for the seat of Oldham.
