Pictured above is legendary guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Jimi Hendrix. -
Johnny Allen Hendrix “Jimmy” was born on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington. As a young man, Hendrix taught himself to play the guitar and was greatly encouraged by his father, Al. When Jimi was 16, his father bought him his first acoustic guitar and his first electric guitar a year later. Not too long after acquiring his electric guitar, he began playing with his band, the Rocking Kings. -
In 1961, Hendrix enlisted in the military and trained as a paratrooper. However, he was injured just a year later on a jump and was discharged due to the injury. He then played as a session musician, backing may famous musicians of that time until he met Chas Chandler in 1966. Chandler was the bassist for the Animals. He convinced Hendrix to go to London where then formed the group known as the Jimi Hendrix Experience. -
The above photo was taken just a few years after Hendrix formed his group and only two years after one his most famous songs “Hey Joe” was released. Hendrix’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while at Woodstock in 1969 is widely regarded as one of his most legendary performances. -
Sadly, Hendrix died on September 18, 1970—just a little over a year after the above photo was taken—from drug-related complications. He was only 27 when he died.
