Pictured above are Mariah Carey at age 18 and Will Smith at age 19 while at the KIIS FM Endless Summer Jam in 1988. -
Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her parents Roy Carey—and aeronautical engineer—and her mother, Patricia Carey—an opera singer and voice coach—were divorced three years after her birth. As early as four years old, Carey was receiving voice lessons from her mother. -
Before Carey became successful in the music industry, she worked for a while in Manhattan as a coat check girl and a waitress, and she also studied cosmetology for a little while. However, at the age of 18 (the same year this photo was taken), she signed with Columbia records, which launched her professional career. In 1990, just a couple of years after this photo was taken, Carey’s self-titled debut album included four No. 1 singles. -
Will Smith was born on September 28, 1968, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he was 16, he and Jeff Townes began the rap group known as “DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.” When they began their music career, they decided to produce music that was not like the West Coast gangster rap of their time. Instead, they rapped about teenage life, which was well received. -
In 1986, their song “Girl’s Ain’t Nothing But Trouble” gained them a significant amount of recognition, and the next year, their debut album “Rock the House” landed in the Billboard Top 200. In 1988, they released another album “He’s The DJ, I’m The Rapper,” which was also pretty successful. In 1990, Smith began playing in the now well-known television series, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Which launched his acting career. -
Today, both Carey and Smith are still well-respected and admired pop-culture icons.
