Of the 44 men who have served as president of the United States, only four have been assassinated. Abraham Lincoln was the first. On April 14, 1865, President Lincoln was attending a performance of “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre on Washington, D.C. when John Wilks Booth, who was himself an actor and a Confederate sympathizer, went up to where the President was sitting and shot him in the head, causing him to die the next day from his wound.

However, that was not initially the plan for Booth and his co-conspirators. They had originally planned to kidnap Lincoln and hold him as ransom in hopes of saving the Confederate States. However, with the surrender of Robert E. Lee just five days before, they knew there was little hope for their confederacy, so Booth decided to just kill Lincoln.

Whereas there have been several assassination attempts since the death of Lincoln, only three have been successful. James A. Garfield was shot twice on July 2, 1881 and died two months after from a severe infection. William McKinley was shot twice in the stomach on September 6, 1901 and died eight days later. Finally, John F. Kennedy was shot on November 22, 1963. He died shortly after being shot.
