-
Ava Lavinia Gardner was born on December 24, 1922, in Grabtown, North Carolina. As a child, her family farmed tobacco, and young Gardner never really thought about becoming an actress. However, when she was 18, Metro-Golden-Mayer discovered her by seeing her picture in the window of her brother-in-law’s photography shop in New York.
-
Soon after that, she was contacted and given a screen test. Initially, she had very little talent and a very strong southern accent, but that did not stop MGM from signing her and working with her. For the first few years of her career, she was cast in minor roles. However, Gardner was eventually cast in a Universal Pictures movie titled “The Killers” (1946) with famous actor Burt Lancaster.
-
After her performance in that film, she was taken more seriously as an actress and was given better roles. A few years later, she played in the film “Mogambo” (1953) and earned her first and only ever Academy Award nomination.
-
Some of her most famous movies are “The Killers,” “Seven Days in May” (1964), “The Night of the Iguana” (1964), and “On the Beach” (1959).
-
Along with her successful acting career, Gardner was also known for her various marriages. She was married to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and then from 1951-1957, she was married to legendary singer, Frank Sinatra. After her failed marriages, Gardner was once said, “I think the main reason my marriages failed is that I always loved too well but never wisely.”
-
Gardner continued acting on into the 1980s, but those films were not quite as successful as some from the past. Gardner died on January 25, 1990, in London, England.
