Pictured above is Samurai of the Satsuma Domain, by Felice Beato in the 1860s. This photograph was taken during the Boshin War period, where the Satsuma Domain fought for the imperial side in Japan. The Satsuma Domain was known to be a Japanese domain during the Edo period (where Japan was under the ruling of Tokugawa shogunate).
-
The Satsuma was seen as a political and economic abstraction that was based on periodic cadastral surveys and agricultural yields. Kokudaka was what defined Satsuma, instead of the land area that surrounded them. Satsuma was ruled from Kagoshima Castle, which later became the core city of Kagoshima.

The Boshin War was the Japanese Civil War, which was fought from 1868 to 1869. The War was fought between forces that sided with the ruling of Tokugawa shogunate, and those seeking to return political power to the Imperial Court. Around 120,000 men were mobilized during the War, and around 3,500 were killed.
