Jimi Hendrix (pictured left) jamming in the Army with the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, 1962. Not many people know about Hendrix’ early history, but during 1962 he was given the option to either join the army or go to jail for two years after being charged for driving in stolen vehicles. As pictured above, he decided to go to the army — but was discharged only one year later.

Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27 1942, was an American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter. His popularity and mainstream career lasted for around four-years, but is still widely known to be one of the most influential electric guitarists in history — with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describing him as, “arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music.”

Hendrix was born in Seattle and began learning the guitar at only 15-years of age. After his discharge from the army in 1961, Hendrix played his first gig in ‘Chitlin’ Circuit’, where he earned a place in the ‘Isley Brothers’ backing band. He was mostly inspired by American rock and roll and electric blues, which is shown throughout his music; earning him the title of the ‘greatest guitarist of all time.’
