Jesse Woodson James was born on September 5, 1847, and was raised in the ‘Little Dixie’ area of Missouri. He is recognized for being an American outlaw, bank and train robber and guerrilla. James was also the leader of a violent gang called the ‘James Younger-Gang.’
-
Growing up, James followed in the footsteps of his family and their strong southern sympathies. With this being the case, James and his brother Frank joined a pro-confederate guerrilla warfare known as the ‘bushwhackers.’ In 1864, they were both accused of participating in violence performed against Union soldiers and civilian abolitionists.
-
There have been popular depictions of James being the incarnation of Robin Hood; with the ‘steal from the rich, give to the poor’ personification. However, there is actually no evidence that supports this, as he and his gang shared a very close kinship network — where sharing their goods was very doubtful. On April 3, 1882, James was shot and killed by trusted gang member Robert Ford. His death became a national sensation and Ford made no attempt to hide his role in the murder of Jesse James.
