This photograph graphically expresses how horrendous the rush hour became during 1909 in Chicago’s downtown streets. This is traffic congestion on the Dearborn and Randolph intersection, where electric trolleys compete against horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians. What this photograph also demonstrates is how eventful the business was in the Chicago Loop.
-
The Loop is one of Chicago’s 77 designated community areas, which happens to be one of the major central business districts. It is the abode to Chicago’s commercial core, City Hall, and the seat of Cook County. Chicago was initially platted in 1830 and included the north of Madison Street and the west of State Street. What is now known as the Chicago Loop was first introduced in 1833 and flourished by the start of the 1840s.
-
The Loop has been recognized for the skyscrapers and high-rises that dominate the area. One of the most notable buildings which was demolished in late 1931 was the Home Insurance Building, which was allegedly considered to be the world’s first skyscraper. Further outstanding attractions include the Agora Sculpture, Auditorium Building, Buckingham Fountain, Chicago Theater and Chicago City Hall.
